![]() Before You Buy Is Granite more expensive than man made materials? Given that stone is a natural product imported from all over the world, the price spectrum is wide. However, many granite color are offered at the same price or sometimes less than man made products. Can I use Marble in a kitchen? Answer is yes, not all Marble is suitable for a kitchen installation. There are, however, some types of Marble that have the same qualities as Granite, making them suitable for use in kitchen. Will my countertop have seams? A typical slab size is somewhere between 7 and 10 feet. Therefore, your countertop may not require a seam. Many people do not have a problem with seams, but if you are concerned about them you should discuss this with our fabricator prior to fabrication. Often the seams are so tight they are difficult to notice. Which type of sink is best for granite? Under mount or drop-in This is a matter of personal preference. Both types of sinks are sanitary and safe. The ability to wipe off the counter directly in to the sink and the aesthetic appeal make under mount sinks the most popular. Should I approve my slabs before they are fabricated? Absolutely yes. This will help to prevent and surprises or disappointments once the material is installed. How far can Granite extend beyond the cabinetry without additional support? According to the Marble Institute of America, corbels or structured support should be used when an overhang exceeds 10” for 3cm material or 6” for 2cm material. Will bacteria grow on granite? Bacteria, like any other living organism, need something to eat in order to live. Bacteria cannot eat granite. Unclean, unkempt countertops can harbor bacteria regardless of what countertop is used. Granite has performed extremely well in testing; performing second only to stainless steel in its ability to resist bacterial growth. Are veins weak spots in the stone? Not necessarily. Some veins are strictly color variations in the stone. However in some materials natural flaws can exist within the vein, which enhances the color and is characteristic of that stone. Structurally, with today’s processing, these materials do meet the strength requirements for countertop use. How often do you have to seal Granite? Traditionally, homeowners have been told to seal their granite annually. However, with the advancements that have been made in sealing products, some sealer only need to be reapplied every 3-5 years. Check the information on the back of the sealer and follow the recommendations. Will Granite stain? Granite porosities vary. Some Granite if not properly sealed can absorb liquid into the pores this may appear at first to stain; however in many instances a dark area on the countertop will dry and disappear over time. If discoloration occurs, there are products on the market to remove them. Consult stone professional or retail store specializing in stone. How do you know when Granite needs to be re-sealed? If you notice water absorption into the countertop or darker areas around the sink that is an indicator it is time to re-seal. What should I use to clean my Granite? It is best to use a cleaning product made specifically for natural stone. Consult your local stone professional for specific product recommendations. How long will my natural stone last? Take care of your natural stone and it will last for generations. Some natural stone are as old as the earth. How much does stone weigh? Granite 3cm or 1 ¼” weighs approximately 18 lbs a square foot. Granite 2cm or ¾” weighs approximately 16 lbs a square foot. An average kitchen of 75 sqf and 3cm granite will weigh approximately 1350lbs. Can I set hot pots and pans directly to the granite? Granite is durable and takes the abuse of hot pots right from the oven. However excessive heat will help break down the sealer on the granite. Also placing hot pots onto the granite will heat up that area. If you remove the pot, the heat remains and could burn a Childs hand as easily as if they were touching the top of the stove. |
